Barrier Free Housing is a community-based shared independent housing program based in North Minneapolis. We provide safe, affordable, dignity-centered shared housing in North Minneapolis for individuals facing housing instability or in need of a fresh start..
Barrier Free Housing eliminates common barriers to housing—such as high rent, credit checks, income requirements, and extensive employment history verification. Our shared living model creates space for real stability, independence, and growth. Built on compassion, equity, and second chances, we believe everyone deserves a place to rebuild—with respect, support, and true opportunity.

Our Services
Affordable Shared Housing
Fully furnished private and semi-private rooms in a safe, clean, and supportive home environment — with all utilities and onsite laundry included.
Transportation Support Services
We offer local rides to essential appointments like probation check-ins, medical care, and grocery runs. While we aim to support key transportation needs, not all requests may be covered. Our homes are also located near public transportation, making it easier for clients to access the city with independence and ease.
Personal Support Services
Support with tasks such as medication pick-up, shopping assistance, and family visits. We also offer support with completing applications for benefits like food stamps, housing vouchers, and other state or county assistance. Additionally, we assist with monitoring and checking in with probation and parole agencies.

Barrier Free Housing is open to adults (18+) who are facing housing instability or in need of a fresh start. We do not require credit checks or formal income documentation. While we aim to eliminate traditional housing barriers, we do ask for a basic employment history and confirmation of a consistent income source to help ensure housing stability. We’re committed to creating access so everyone has the opportunity to find stability, rebuild with dignity, and belong to a supportive community.

Your monthly fee covers a fully furnished private or semi-private room, all utilities, access to common areas (kitchen, laundry, etc), and basic personal and social support services. Optional transportation services are also available for essential appointments.

Getting started is simple! Just complete our Housing Intake Form, participate in a short interview, sign the waiver, pay your one-time Community Waiver Fee, and move in! You can begin the process by clicking the “Begin Your Fresh Start” button on our website.
